We can finally grasp the truly specific difference between psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It is not only as we have just said, a simple question of praxis; nor even a difference to do with respective ends. We want to say that the essential difference bears on the truth of human being; for these reasons, we will state that the difference is an incommensurability, as, for the psychoanalysis, the truth of the human being is found in the unceasing division of the subject of the unconscious, both object of his incestuous phantasy and object of his phantasy of desire. The historic importance of psychoanalysis rests on its conceptualising the constantly dividing subject as a being of knowledge. It is a procedure directed and conducted by a psychoanalyst, that is to say by a being who is affected by a formation of a knowledge neighbouring to that of the analysand. And it is that formation which can transform the analysand.
